Assessment Process
As a guideline, candidates suitable for consideration for a 16+ Drama Scholarship should be able to show a high level of interest and commitment to performance arts, for example taking GCSE Drama, LAMDA awards and/or participating in productions in school or with external companies.
Candidates for 16+ Drama Scholarships will take part in an improvisation workshop, perform a prepared speech of their choice and work on some unprepared material. Candidates will also have an interview with the Director of Drama.
Expectations of Drama Scholars
The Director of Drama meets with Drama Scholars regularly to support their development and ensure that the above expectations are being met.
It is expected but not essential that candidates have studied Drama at GCSE, although Drama Scholars are encouraged to study Theatre Studies as an academic subject as part of the A Level or IB Diploma programme. LAMDA lessons are optional and the cost of LAMDA lessons are not included as part of a Drama Scholarship. The Director of Drama meets with Drama Scholars regularly to support their development and ensure that the above expectations are being met.
The number of Scholarships awarded is at the discretion of the Head of College.
Drama has a strong profile at Ardingly College, both as an academic subject and in the quality of performance and productions. The College’s performance company, The Pelican Briefs, have staged original shows at the Edinburgh Fringe for several years.
