Ardingly College Prep School
Summary of the Year 2025–26
The 2025–26 academic year has been one of considerable momentum and strategic progress for the Prep School. Across all areas of school life, the school has continued to strengthen its provision, deepen its community connections and build a clear sense of purpose and identity.
Within the Early Years, the strength of our provision is reflected in both participation and retention. This year’s Nursery Sports Day was a particular highlight, bringing together Ducklings, Lambs and Piglets in a joyful and collaborative event that was enthusiastically supported by parents and staff alike. Retention rates across Nursery have been exceptionally strong, with 100% of Ducklings progressing into Lambs, 87.5% of Lambs into Piglets and 100% of Piglets moving into Reception. These figures, alongside improved projected numbers for both Piglets and Ducklings next year, demonstrate growing confidence in our Early Years offering.
Academically, the school has made significant strides this year. The successful embedding of our concept curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 has brought greater cohesion and depth across subjects. Alongside this, the continued focus on developing our learning habitudes is fostering increasingly reflective, resilient and independent learners. Outcomes at the top of the school remain strong, with 68% of Year 6 pupils securing academic and sports scholarships into the senior school. Notably, Ardingly pupils outperformed a large external applicant cohort by an average of 12% in the College’s 11+ English and Mathematics assessments, a clear testament to the quality of teaching and learning across the Prep School.
The breadth and quality of the co-curricular programme remain a defining strength of the school. In sport, the year has been marked by outstanding achievement, including national success for the U11 girls’ football team at the ISFA tournament; exceptional results at the National Schools Biathlon Championships, where pupils secured three team gold medals and an individual silver; and our Year 6 swimmers, who were crowned double National Champions at the English Schools’ Swimming Association! These accomplishments reflect both the depth of talent within the pupil body and the strength of the school’s sports programme.
Outdoor education and enrichment have also played a central role. An overnight camping experience for pupils in Year 4 and above, alongside a full day of outdoor adventure activities for younger year groups on Nine Acre, has further strengthened our commitment to experiential learning and personal development. Meanwhile, events such as the Enterprise Festival and World of Work Day have provided valuable opportunities for pupils to engage with real-world skills, creativity and future pathways.
In the performing arts, the school has enjoyed another productive year. The Music Department has delivered an extensive programme of concerts and events, including Christmas, Easter and Summer concerts, five informal concerts, and the ever-popular House Song Competition, this year won by Bodiam House with a memorable performance of Waving Flag. Community engagement has been strengthened through events such as the Family Concert and Music & Mince Pies.
Beyond the performance calendar, the music department has made strong strategic progress. Pupils have been encouraged to take increasing responsibility and leadership, culminating in a fully pupil-led informal concert for Years 4–6 and student stage management within Year 3 performances. Choral music continues to flourish, with all choirs in Years 3–6 now confidently singing in multipart harmony and contributing to services, including the introduction of new liturgical music. Instrumental provision has also expanded, with the establishment of a School House Orchestra, achieving its debut performance at the Summer Concert, as well as the continued success of the Farmhouse Fiddler group and collaborative performances with Great Walstead School.
Drama and Dance have similarly thrived, offering a wide range of performance opportunities. Highlights included the Prep School’s Dance Show, Santa School (Year 4) and the ambitious production of Shrek by Years 5 and 6, alongside class performances such as The Wizard of Oz, Hansel & Gretel, and Dragons’ Den.
The Interhouse Talent Show once again showcased the breadth of pupil talent, with Pevensey House emerging as winners. The continued success of LAMDA provision, with 42 pupils participating, demonstrates a strong commitment to developing confidence and communication skills. Theatre visits, including trips to The Tiger That Came to Tea and The BFG, have further enriched pupils’ cultural experiences.
Finally, it is fitting to note the external recognition received this year, with the school being named the UK’s Most Innovative Prep School by The Week magazine. This accolade reflects the collective effort of staff and pupils alike in fostering a forward-thinking, dynamic educational environment.
In summary, 2025–26 has been a year of growth, innovation and achievement across the school. Yet what stands out most is the evident happiness of the children: their enthusiasm in the classroom, their energy beyond it and their kindness towards one another. These are the foundations that matter most, and they continue to define life at Ardingly College Prep School.

Great Walstead School
This year the school promoted and developed the accelerated reader programme putting a focus on pupils’ reading ability across the year groups. The school timetable has been adapted to allow an opportunity for every pupil to read in class at least three times a week. All the pupils have joined younger classes to both read to you and hear readers. A series of awards have been created acknowledging pupils’ achievements in terms of the amount they are reading, as well as the diversity of genres. Already the scheme has seen an increase in pupils’ reading ages.
There's also been a focus on the teaching of science and the skills around it across the school. The school has embarked on an 18 month programme to achieve the primary science quality Mark accreditation. This involves promoting not just science, but also pupils’ curiosity, perseverance, independence and research skills through pupil-led investigations. The programme also focuses on developing non-specialist teachers’ knowledge and confidence in delivering high quality science lessons.
15 Great Walstead teachers were trained in mental health first aid to help spot signs of anxiety and other mental health concerns in children. The course included a focus on youth mental health awareness, depression and anxiety.
A total of 18 scholarships were achieved by our Year 8 pupils. These included academic, art, music, sport and all-rounder awards to local senior schools including Ardingly, Bede's, Brighton and Hurst. As well as each pupil taking part in a school production, the main whole school play saw the delights of Matilda brought to life on the school stage.
The “sport for all” ethos continues to thrive with every pupil taking part in competitive matches across a variety of different sports. The U13 girls’ cricket team had a good season with an impressive run in the National cup, which saw them come close to progressing out of the regional stages.
There was investment into the school by way of a refurbishment programme to the school swimming pool including the changing rooms and toilets, while the pre-prep atrium has received a makeover allowing better access from all the classrooms to the outdoor learning area.

Ardingly College’s International Family of Schools
This year has been an exciting time for Ardingly’s international family of schools, as we opened the first British boarding school in Vietnam and our thriving school in Astana is about to move into its new, purpose-built campus.
We are also looking forward to announcing another Ardingly overseas school in the summer of 2026 – watch this space!

Ardingly Astana
Ardingly opened its first international school in Kazakhstan in Astana in September 2024 in a beautiful brownfield site suitable for primary aged children. As student numbers have now grown significantly, Ardingly Astana is now ready to move into its new, purpose built campus on a greenfield site. This new, modern, vibrant campus will officially open in September 2026 and will cater to students from kindergarten all the way through to Year 13. The team in Sussex is looking forward to visiting the new site again once everyone has moved in this summer.
Ardingly Astana is the result of a long-term partnership with Primus Education and we are planning to open a second school in Kazakhstan, to be based in Almaty, in the years to come.
Capital and operational expenditure for all of our international schools is provided by investors who share Ardingly College’s educational vision and wish to make a difference in their own country.
Ardingly College Vietnam
In March 2026, Mrs Jo Hayter (Deputy Head, Pastoral & Co-curricular) was delighted to attend the formal launch of Ardingly College Vietnam in Lao Cai. This impressive school is the first British boarding school to be opened in Vietnam and is located on a fantastic 10 hectare site, with nearly 50,000m2 of floor space including inspirational academic buildings, outstanding boarding facilities, as well as excellent sports and performing arts facilities.
Ardingly College Vietnam is the result of a long-term collaboration with KNI, a multi-sector investment group with a focus on high quality education. Ardingly and KNI first worked together in 2022 and we were delighted to take this partnership to a new level with the official opening of Ardingly College Vietnam in early 2026. We have very much enjoyed welcoming senior leaders from Lao Cai to Ardingly for two recent visits, where we have exchanged best practice and demonstrated how we deliver outstanding pastoral care and a world class boarding experience for our students in the UK. We recently visited the British Consulate in Ho Chi Minh and The British Embassy in Hanoi to present to parents on the opportunities that boarding presents to students. We will be working closely together in the next few months and years and look forward to seeing Ardingly College Vietnam go from strength to strength.
