WOODARD BOYS
What a year it has been in Woodard Boys! As another chapter at Ardingly draws to a close, we are left reflecting on the friendships forged, the challenges embraced and the many moments that have come to define this exceptional cohort.
It is no exaggeration to say that this has been a group full of character. From the outset, the boys brought with them not only an abundance of talent, but also a genuine sense of camaraderie that has underpinned everything they have achieved. As individuals they have flourished, but it is as a House that they have truly stood out, consistently embodying the College values and setting a standard for others to follow.
Leadership has been a defining feature of the year. Matt Jessep and Henry Cleverly have led the House Team with distinction, setting the tone for a culture that is both supportive and aspirational. Their presence was felt in all aspects of house life, from the structure and rhythm of weekly call-overs, to the small but meaningful moments that bring a community together. Whether offering thoughtful guidance or injecting humour into the everyday, their leadership helped foster an environment in which everyone felt valued and included.
Across the breadth of College life, Woodard Boys have excelled. Academically, the boys have shown determination and focus, applying themselves with maturity and purpose. Beyond the classroom, the diversity of talent within the House has been remarkable. Musicians, actors, vocalists and scholars have thrived alongside footballers, cricketers, hockey players, fencers and debaters, each contributing to a vibrant and dynamic house identity.
There have been many memorable moments throughout the year. The House Platonic Speed Dating event brought with it both laughter and a welcome dose of light-hearted competition, while the Christmas Black Tie Drinks Party stood out as an occasion of real warmth and unity, capturing the spirit of the house at its best. A particular highlight of the social calendar was the now-infamous ‘Hot Ones’ evening, which saw pupils bravely (and at times regrettably) taking on progressively spicier wings. What began with confidence quickly descended into a mixture of determination, disbelief and amusement, providing a memorable and thoroughly entertaining shared experience that will not soon be forgotten. These events, along with countless informal gatherings, have strengthened the bonds that make Woodard Boys such a close-knit community.
The boys have also distinguished themselves on a wider stage. Particular congratulations must go to Victor Michel, Parker Chan, Ivan Osipov and Andrea Fontanesi, whose success in Imperial College’s Innovation Challenge (where they beat over 2000 other entrants) was a testament to their creativity, collaboration and intellectual ambition. In sport, the House has enjoyed notable success, with Josiah Wood’s selection for the England U18 hockey squad representing a significant achievement, complemented by a series of outstanding performances on the cricket field across the season.
House competitions have, as ever, been fiercely contested. From the intensity of sporting fixtures to the ever-competitive table tennis matches that have become a staple of House life, the boys have embraced every opportunity to represent Woodard with pride. A particular highlight came in House Song, where, under the energetic leadership of William White, the House delivered a performance of real quality and spirit to secure a resounding victory. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated what can be achieved when Woodard Boys come together with a shared sense of purpose.
Perhaps most pleasing of all has been the strength of the house community itself. The pride the boys take in Woodard Boys has been evident throughout the year, and it has been especially rewarding to see the younger members grow in confidence, supported and inspired by the example set by the older students. The sense of tradition, belonging and mutual respect has rarely been stronger.
As we look back on the year, there is much to celebrate. It has been a privilege to share in the journey of such a talented and engaging group of young men. They leave Woodard Boys having made a lasting impression on the house, and I have no doubt that they will go on to achieve great things in the years ahead.
