BURGESS

This year began with a bang in the Michaelmas Term as Burgess House started strongly by taking first place in Steepo! This set the tone for a year filled with energy, enthusiasm and determination. Our early success created a strong sense of momentum across the House; following on from Steepo, we achieved an impressive second place finish in House Hockey, where the girls showed an exemplary level of commitment and teamwork that couldn’t have made us prouder!

Beyond sport, Burgess continued to shine in the performing arts. The House is home to many talented dancers, actors and musicians who all contributed to a wide range of school events. Performers took to the stage in productions such as Lost in Motion, Blithe Spirit, Shermock and the recent performance of Robin Hood, each showcasing confidence, creativity and dedication both onstage and from behind the curtains. Our musicians also played an important role throughout the year, taking part in concerts, ensembles and recitals that added richness to the cultural life of the school, honouring Burgess with their practices before these showcases. Their involvement reflects the breadth of talent within Burgess and the pride we take in supporting one another across all areas of school life.

The Lent Term brought further achievements. In the annual House Song competition all the girls where eager to get involved and determined to produce an award-winning performance. We achieved a creditable second place (top girls’ house!) with a lively and ‘well-rehearsed’ performance, according to the judges, of Rather Be by Jess Glynne. We also came third in House Ensemble with a confident rendition of Price Tag by Jessie J. These results highlight the musical strength of the House, the House Spirit, and the willingness of all the students to step forward and perform, even when it may not be their strong suit. A big well done to Charlotte Donougher and Elina Rolph for leading. The term also delivered outstanding sporting success, with Burgess winning House Netball, Ping Pong and Paddle. These victories were the result of determination and a strong sense of unity that carried our girls through every match.

After the Easter break, the Trinity Term began with a wonderful House Dinner. Michaela Stilwell and Iona McNally led an inspiring charity event during the evening, raising funds for Alzheimer’s Disease International, a cause that resonated deeply with many members of the House. It was a memorable night that brought everyone together to celebrate community, generosity and shared achievement which were highlighted through speeches and many musical performances throughout the night, with stand out performances from Elise Thorpe, Esme Robson and Jenin Hussain and an apt revival of ‘Rather Be,’ from the whole House. Later in the term, we enjoyed a House Netball social with Rhodes, which Burgess won with confidence and enthusiasm, adding another highlight to a successful year alongside winning the Academic Cup!

To round off an exceptional year, Burgess has just secured victory in House Tennis, adding one final achievement to a year filled with success, creativity and commitment, along with all the girls surviving and acing their end of year exams!

Burgess House truly embodies the Ardingly spirit. From sporting triumphs to artistic performances and charitable initiatives, the girls have shown what can be achieved through teamwork, positivity and pride, and a sense of belonging.
